  • Response to "Is UPRR getting a new President?": Guest Blogger

In the past the individual promoted to the President’s position came from the Operating Department. Mike Walsh was the exception, in recent history: no railroad experience at all, but he had the ability to excite Wall Street. We did not operate any better. He shook up the organizational chart and changed the names of all the traditional operating jobs (i.e.: Trainmasters became Managers of Train Operations, Road Foreman of Engines became Managers of Operating Practices, etc…). Also, he told his Operating top officers that never again would an Operating man become the President.

  • Sandhouse Gossip—Is the Union Pacific getting a new President?

It appears as though the Union Pacific is going to have a new President soon. Sources inside of the UP have indicated that Dennis Duffy will be named as the new head of the railroad. It looks as though Jim Young will keep the title of Chief Executive Officer. If this move were made it would be a step forward for the railroad.

It should be noted regarding UPRR Engineer training. The head training (aka) sim manager has never been near a locomotive or train for that matter!

He did come from the IT dept. but couldn’t hire out as a basic Tech.
This Sim Manager from the Great Salt Lake Training Center was a construction foreman. No degree, no certifications, never near a locomotive

He did fall into a empty job once his construction job was abolished. And again. And yet again.

No college, no degree, no experience, no certification.

His team isn’t much different, most off of the street as contractors soon to be Harriman receiptants without consideration of inside employees.

This is the way it is in the educational forefront of the UPRR Training dept of HR.

By the way, public information indicates that Barb Shafer of HR has cashed in about 10 million of stock just recently!?
